Flatbed Scanning
Best for: prints, vintage photographs, and flat original artwork
The 12″ x 17″ flatbed scanner is the perfect solution for reflecting copies held in your hand and not viewed through light, such as faded family photographs or artwork that needs to be copied into larger sizes. It works well in conjunction with our digital restoration service for scratches, wrinkles, or water damage.
Imacon Flextight X5 Scanning
Best for: color and black-and-white negatives, chromes, and film you plan to print large or retouch heavily
The Hasselblad Flextight X5 offers drum scan-quality scanning at an affordable cost without waiting for weeks to receive your scans. The scanner accommodates film sizes up to 4 x 5 (35mm up to 6 x 9) with an optical resolution up to 8000 dpi on 35mm and a dynamic range of 4.9. Due to its efficiency, it has become ideal for editorial, portfolio and web work clients.
Drum Scanning
Best for: originals you’re printing very large, archiving permanently, or reproducing with maximum fidelity, including non-standard film sizes.
Drum scanning is our most premium option, delivering unmatched quality by capturing film’s full tonal range, including borders if desired. We scan everything from 35mm to 8×10, plus non-standard formats like 110, 126, and panoramas. Because each image is manually scanned with included color and exposure adjustments, turnaround is 2 to 3 weeks (3 to 4 weeks for 8×10).

File Formats and Delivery
The scans will be provided as either a JPEG or a TIFF file depending on the selection you make during the check-out process. The TIFF file is the uncompressed image file and the ideal format when you wish to do heavy editing or print large images.

What’s the difference between a drum scan and a Flextight scan?
A drum scanner provides the best tonal range and resolution, but the process is slow. Flextight X5 is fast and economical yet offers almost similar results to those of a drum scanner.

Can you scan artwork that isn’t film or a photograph?
Yes, flatbed scanning is the right approach to scan reflective artworks that are not larger than 12 × 17 inches, such as paintings on paper and other two-dimensional artworks.

Do I need an appointment to order fine art scanning?
No, scanning can be ordered directly online or dropped off in-store. Appointments are only needed for the Fine Art Printing consultation service.

Should I choose 8-bit or 16-bit for my Flextight scan?
With 16-bit files, you have more color and tone data, which allows for greater flexibility in editing, while 8-bit files are smaller and are adequate for basic printing and web usage.
