Film Proof Sheet Service & Digital Contact Sheets

Before you make any decisions about your prints, take a look at all your images in one shot. The Icon’s proof sheets and contact sheets let you see every image on the roll exactly as it appears on the negative.

ABOUT PROOF & CONTACT SHEETS

These are both easy ways to review a complete roll of film at once and archive a roll for later use. They’re also often used for editing sessions, project planning, or client presentations. These sheets provide a clear, organized view of each frame before selecting your final prints.

  • We accept 35mm, 120, and Sheet Film (4×5, 5×7, 8×10).
  • True-to-negative exposure.
  • Frame selection and labeling for easy indexing.
  • Test strip printing to find the best exposure.
  • Option to scan to digital for even more flexibility

PRICING AND QUANTITY SELECTION

Pricing is determined by the number of individual Proof Sheet pages you will need. Different film types require a different number of Proof Sheet pages.

Each 35mm and 120 film roll equates to 1 Proof Sheet page. All the frames will fit on one Proof Sheet page. So, one roll of film will equate to one Proof Sheet page. If you have multiple rolls, increase the total product quantity on this page or in your cart.

For Sheet Film, the number of Proof Sheet pages changes based on the size of your Sheet Film.

  • 4×5: One Proof Sheet Page can display one-to-four 4×5 Film Sheets. If you have more than four sheets, you will be charged for additional pages.
  • 5×7: One Proof Sheet Page can display one-to-two 5×7 Film Sheets. If you have more than two sheets, you will be charged for additional pages.
  • 8×10: One Proof Sheet Page can display one 8×10 Film Sheet. If you have more than one sheet, you will be charged for additional pages.

SCANNING OPTIONS

Our commercial-grade flatbed scanner and experienced staff capture amazing detail from your film in order to create a digital version of your proof sheet. You can choose either a standard 100MB or a higher-resolution 200MB file size. With a larger scan, each image on the contact sheet has greater clarity and resolution. A larger scan offers the opportunity to crop individual frames down to a single image.

100MB: 5200×6500 pixels
200MB: 7400×9300 pixels

What Proof Sheets and Contact Sheets Are Used For

Proof sheets and contact sheets provide a quick visual reference of an entire roll of film on a single page. They allow photographers to review film frames, compare individual exposures, and archive a roll for future reference before ordering full-size prints or digital film scans.

  • Editing sessions and photo selection
  • Project planning and film image selection
  • Client presentations
  • Reviewing film negatives and individual frames
  • Selecting which frames to print or scan at full size
  • Creating a visual archive of developed negatives

What’s Included in a Proof Sheet Order

  • True-to-negative exposure: An accurate film proof print showing how each frame appears on the negative.
  • Frame selection and labelling: Individual film frames are clearly organized for easy indexing when you return to order specific prints or scans.
  • Test strip printing: Helps determine the appropriate exposure before final printing and is useful for darkroom printing workflows.
  • Optional digital contact sheet scan: Add a digital contact sheet for an easy-to-store digital reference of your proof sheet.

How Proof Sheet Pricing Works

Pricing for our film proof sheet service is based on the number of individual proof sheet pages your order requires rather than a flat per-roll rate. Different film formats require different numbers of pages.

  • 35mm and 120 film contact sheets: Each roll equals one proof sheet page. All film frames from the roll fit onto a single page, making it ideal for 35mm contact sheet printing and reviewing a complete roll of film.
  • Sheet Film: The number of proof sheet pages depends on your sheet film size: 4×5, 5×7, or 8×10.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What’s the difference between a proof sheet and a contact sheet?

Both give you a true-to-negative view of a full roll of film on one page, useful for reviewing every frame before deciding what to print or scan at full size.

  • What film formats can I get proof sheets for?

    35mm, 120, and Sheet Film in 4×5, 5×7, or 8×10 sizes.

  • How many proof sheet pages will I need for my roll of film?

For 35mm and 120 film, one roll always equals one page – every frame on the roll fits on that single page. For sheet film, the number of pages depends on your film size.

  • How do I order contact sheets for all of them?

Increase the product quantity at checkout to match your number of rolls. Each additional roll adds another proof sheet page to your order.

  • Can I get a digital contact sheet version of my proof sheet?

Yes. You can add a digital contact sheet scan at either a standard 100MB file size or a higher-resolution 200MB file size. The higher-resolution option provides sharper detail and allows you to crop individual film frames when needed.

  • How long does it take to get my proof sheets back?

Turnaround depends on your order volume. Orders of 10 or more rolls generally take longer, and The Icon will reach out with an estimated turnaround based on current production times.

  • What can I use a proof sheet or contact sheet for?

Proof sheets are commonly used for editing sessions, planning a project, presenting options to a client, or simply deciding which frames from a roll are worth printing or scanning larger.
