FAQ Home

Where in town are you located?
The Icon is in the Miracle Mile district of Los Angeles on Wilshire Blvd at Cochran Avenue, 3 blocks West of La Brea Avenue.

What are your hours?
We’re happy to serve you Monday through Friday 8:30AM - 7PM and on Saturdays from Noon - 5PM.  If you miss us, we do have a secure Night Drop located behind the building.  Simply place your film in an envelope or bag and be sure to include your name, a telephone number where you can be reached, and instructions for us to follow.  We will call you if we have questions and to get payment information.

Do you sell film?
We do not currently sell film or any camera-related equipment.

Do you offer gift certificates?
Gift Certificates for the Icon can be purchased on our Yelp page!

Do you offer mounting or framing services?
We concentrate on making the best print possible for you, but we do not offer framing or mounting services.  We’d be happy to provide information on framers in the Los Angeles area with whom we’re familiar - just give us a call!

How do you process film?
For each of our lines - color neg, BW neg and slide film - we use Refrema dip and dunk machines.  While other labs use roller-fed minilab processors, which can potentially scratch your film, or hand processing with its danger of over agitation, with dip and dunk systems your film is suspended from a rack and completely touch-free throughout the processing and drying stages, eliminating the possibility of scratches.

Do you push or pull film?
For color negative (C41)  films, we push up to 7 stops and pull up to 2 ½ stops.
For color slide (E6) films, we push up to 4 ⅞ stops and pull up to 1 ½ stops.
For black and white films, the maximum push or pull will vary by film type and size, but generally speaking we push up to 3 stops and pull up to 2 stops.  If you would like to know about a specific film type and size, please contact us.

What size film or prints can you scan?
We can scan all standard sized films, such as 35mm, 120 and 220 cm, 4x5” and 8x10”, and on our drum scanner we can scan films that are not standard sizes, such 110 or 126.  Not all sizes of film can be accommodated on all of our scanners; please contact us for details.

For reflective items such as prints of drawings, our Epson Expression 11000XL Photo Scanner flatbed scanner has an active scanning area of 12” x 17”.

I found an image that I love on the internet.  Can you size it to the print size I want?
Images collected off of the internet have two main issues: copyright and file size.  Most images that you can save to your computer from the internet are sized too small to be printed at any quality, and the reason for that is to prevent copyright infringement.  The photographer or artist producing the work has the exclusive right to print the image, or to license and/or allow others to do so.

Here, then, is our official Copyright Policy:
The Icon does not promote or authorize copyright infringement. If a person or company has made an unauthorized use of any artists work, using any of our services and the use is not considered "fair use" under the law, that artist can bring a lawsuit against that person or company for copyright infringement. The possible penalties for being held liable for infringement can be quite severe. The Icon hopes that all of its customers make sure that the work they are reproducing is legal.

How long will it take until my job is ready?
We strive  to produce the highest quality work in the shortest possible time.  All jobs received after 5PM are treated as if they were ordered on the following day.  Weekend days and holidays on which the lab is closed do not count as production days for turnaround.

Some examples:

A job with two-day (48 hour) turnaround received at the lab before 9:00 a.m. on Monday would be ready after 5:00PM Wednesday. A job with three-day (72 hour) turnaround received at the lab after 6:00pm on Friday would be ready after 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The digital department currently operates between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Do you print on rigid aluminum?
Presently our printers are not configured to print on rigid aluminum, but we are looking into the processes to ensure it meets our high standards.  Check back with us!

I can’t get to the lab to pick up my job right away.  How long will the Icon hold my files, film or prints?
While we are working on your job, and for 14 days after the job is completed, we keep all data such as digital files on a RAID storage system to minimize potential data loss due to hardware failure. Each night all data is backed up to a secondary location where every copy of every version of every file is stored for 14 days. After 14 days the files are erased from our servers permanently.

All unclaimed physical materials such as prints or film will be destroyed after six months.
