About Felipe Dupouy:

My surroundings have a deep effect on me. My art is inspired by a genuine curiosity
about the world in which I live, and more specifically, the city I inhabit. For me there is a
sense of urgency to visually record the rapidly changing landscape. My work is as much
about my personal exploration of Los Angeles as it is about the final prints. The process
is intuitive, and the resulting photographs are the product of the unique interchange that I
experience between the city and myself. The emotional quality of my images is a
reflection of the depth of my own personal attachment to our past and future. Portrait Los
Angeles is a record of the historic architecture in Downtown, an attempt to preserve the
details for posterity.

PROFILE. Over the course of a decade, Felipe Dupouy has documented the structures
that make up the city of Los Angeles. For Felipe, it is the buildings – new and old – that
are the heart and soul of this great city and that best tell of its many incarnations. The
artist conceives of these photographs as portraits. Each structure has its own distinct
personality, its own unique story to tell. The images are sometimes stark, sometimes
grand like the varied landscape of Los Angeles Itself. Much of the series was shot in and
around Downtown Los Angeles before its revitalization at a time when it was relatively
untenanted. In this solitude, the grandeur of the cityscape resounds. In a town where
facades come and go like a Hollywood movie set, Felipe Dupouy gives us an account of
the beauty and glory of an ever-changing character picture by picture.
Felipe is working on a book about this city.
