Frank W. Ockenfels 3 is a treasured Los Angeles-based photographer who has spent 20 years creating iconic images of musicians and celebrities. His rough-hewn soulful portraits for publications such as Rolling Stone, Esquire, GQ, W, Wired, Spin, Men’s Journal, Men’s Health, Outside, Conde Nast Traveler, Blender, Maxim, Newsweek, and Entertainment Weekly stand apart from the crowd. Clark Oshin Gallery at The Icon is pleased to present the first Los Angeles solo exhibition of the photographs and drawings of Frank W. Ockenfels 3 at 5450 Wilshire Bvd., Los Angeles, California. An opening reception is scheduled for November 21, 2009 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The exhibition, which is co-sponsored by Canon, will continue through January 30, 2010.
Known for a moody dark image style, but not darkness for darkness sake, Ockenfels often uses existing light and shadow to make light collaborate with the subject to create the portrait. “My work, whether it is photography, collage or drawings, is based on the allowance of what is given at the moment of execution. It reflects my openness to the present moment and embraces the inherent fortune of the happy accident.”
Frank W. Ockenfels 3 has photographed advertising campaigns, movie posters, television galleries, and over 200 album covers and press shoots for musicians from David Bowie to No Doubt and Willie Nelson. His exhibition “Without Filter” will feature a selection from the 15 portrait sessions he shot with Bowie as well as his signature scrapbook series of collaged photo contact sheets and drawn imagery. The show will also include an extensive collection of portraiture from throughout Ockenfels’ career. Clark Oshin Gallery’s non-traditional exhibition space at The Icon lends itself to Ockenfels’ experimental nature and the show itself will reflect that quality.
Clark Oshin Gallery is directed by Kathleen Clark and Nan Oshin. The Icon is a full-service traditional photo lab and digital lab featuring exceptional museum-quality printing. This exhibition was printed using Canon’s imagePROGRAF iPF6100 printer.
